The story follows Marina, a young woman, who as a child was abandoned at the bottom of the stairs in a hallway. Desperate to find out more about her biological parents, Marina moves into the building complex where she was found as a baby. Whilst living at 24 Harrington Gardens, she tries to uncover clues in her desperation to discover the truth…

This was a wonderful book packed with mystery and intrigue.  Despite growing up with loving adoptive parents, nobody has told her who her parents were and it feels as though she is missing a key part of her identity. She tries to conceal her true identity from the residents in the flats to protect herself and to try to learn more. I could really empathise with Marina as she tries to discover more about her heritage.

It was great to see the story from multiple perspectives, both Marina’s and a woman named Connie. The mystery cast a shadow over the story throughout a kept me intrigued and guessing along the way! As Marina investigates the residents, you become so invested in their stories and trying to piece them together that it sucks you in.

A beautifully written story that shows the meaning of family. It has a seamless narrative that flows effortlessly combining the two perspectives and time periods. I raced through this and loved reading it.

If you’re looking for an intriguing suspense novel that will keep you guessing until the very end, you need to read this!

About the author

JENNY QUINTANA grew up in Essex and Berkshire before studying English Literature in London. She has taught in London, Seville and Athens. Her first novel, The Missing Girl was published in 2017 and chosen as a Waterstones thriller of the month. Our Dark Secret, her second novel, was published in 2020. She now lives with her family in Berkshire.
